Identification Please

“Qualia Police” will be part of the “Identification Please” exchange portfolio and exhibition during the Southern Graphics Council (SGC) in Chicago, Illinois.  The exhibition and portfolio are curated by Christopher Ganz.

Here is Christopher Ganz’s description of the portfolio:

“Internationally/nationally forms of identification are being increasingly demanded of individuals for the sake of employment, travel, security, and data registries.  Security and information firms are booming globally as a result.  The wearing of bar-coded name tags is increasing and trending towards universal acceptance. This Orwellian need for states/corporations to be aware of and control the movement of people is threatening to individual freedom and cultural exchange.  In a positive light, ID’s are an increasingly sophisticated graphic medium, an institutionalized art form that has great potential for creativity.  This portfolio’s purpose is to subvert the concept of ID with creativity and humor; turn it into artwork instead of an instrument of dehumanization.

The portfolio concept is a nametag print.  Each artist will invent a multinational company/agency/ or country and create a print/nametag for an employee/citizen.  The nametag identity could be a self-portrait, fictional person, robot, animal, etc. Graphic and biometric identification (bar-codes, fingerprints, or futuristic forms) are to be incorporated in the print.  Each print will be displayed in a nametag holder and hung with a chord or clip.”
